Life

A graduate in public recreation, Sexton was a gymnast and attended Ohio State University. However, before migrating to public recreation, Sexton was studying business. Around this time, Sexton started playing poker and teaching bridge strategy in North Carolina. Mike used to joke that he had majored in poker since during college he played more than he attended classes.

After that, Sexton had to join the United States Army, where he joined the 82nd Airborne Division in the year 1970, as a paratrooper. By this time, Sexton's division had just returned from Vietnam. During this period, Mike took the opportunity to teach ballroom dancing, and that's when one of his clients convinced him to become a salesman. However, Sexton played the role of salesman for a few years, but eventually realized he could make more money in poker, so in 1977, Sexton became a poker pro.

In the mid-1980s, more precisely in 1985, Sexton moved to Nevada to make poker his mainstay. Since then, Sexton has become extremely well known in the poker world, being one of the keynote speakers at the funeral of legend Stu Ungar.

Journey through poker

In his career as a poker pro, Mike Sexton has won several titles over the course of his life. However, at the World Series of Poker, Sexton only got one bracelet, but he has already crossed the $5 million mark. The bracelet that Sexton secured from the WSOP came in the 1989 edition of the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Split event, where the player managed to cash in the amount of $104,400 plus the series bracelet.

Amidst the World Series of Poker, Sexton has earned more than $2.6 million from his 72 WSOP appearances. It is worth saying that in 2005 Sexton occupied tenth place in the WSOP Main Event, and was also one of the 16 finalists in Poker SuperStars II. The following year, in 2006, the grinder took the bronze medal in the annual tournament of the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions, where he shelved the amount of US$ 1 million.

In 2012, Sexton was present at the edition of the WSOP Big One for One Drop, where he occupied the ninth position with US$ 1,109,333. Unfortunately his last appearance at the WSOP was in the year 2019, when he teamed up with James Holzhauer.

Commentator

In addition to being an excellent player, Sexton was also a commentator on the World Poker Tour. During this period, Sexton was with Vince Van Patten. The partnership between the two yielded the following articles: Card Player Magazine and Gambling Times. In addition, Sexton created the Tournament of Poker Champions.

End of the journey

Despite having had great achievements, Mike Sexton, also known as "The Ambassador of Poker", unfortunately ended his activities in 2020. In Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, at the age of 72, Sexton died on September 6, 2020, two weeks before his birthday. Reportedly, Sexton died of prostate cancer.
